A LONG ROAD TO FREEDOM: SINGING SPIRITUALS – ANTHONY TRECEK-KING (USA) 

This workshop delves into the rich tapestry of history, context and performance practice of the African American Spiritual. From the roots of slavery through to the 21st century, Anthony will help uncover the deeper meanings woven into each song and unlock the secrets hidden within their various styles, from their origins before the Civil War to their transformation over subsequent years. 

Anthony Trecek-King is an acclaimed choral conductor, scholar, pedagogue and media personality with a career spanning over 20 years. Resident Conductor (chorus) with the Handel and Haydn Society, his ensembles have been integral in projects that have won a Pulitzer Prize (Madam White Snake, Zhou Long) and a Grammy (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Boston Modern Orchestra Project). He is currently host of the classical radio show ‘The Silent Canon’ (KNVO 90.7) and is on air and online on the Emmy-nominated television series ‘Sing That Thing’.
